Welcome to Oberwesel!

Fittingly, Oberwesel is called the “town of towers and wine”. From afar, those travelling up the Rhine river will recognise the silhouette of the town, with Schönburg castle, the red-stone Church of our Lady, and the impressive town wall with its many towers. What more fitting stage could there be along the Rhine river for the biennial Mediaeval Spectaculum, held every second year at Whitsuntide, which immerses the town in the glow of the long-past but richly colourful Middle Ages?
Modern architecture is reflected in Oberwesel in the new arts centre, which merges skilfully with the charm of an old winery. This is where the citizens of Oberwesel and visitors to the town meet for exhibitions and concerts, and the history of the town is presented in a fresh and very un-museum-like setting. The town’s great treasures can be seen on first glance, inviting visitors to step back into the Middle Ages and find out more about the importance of Oberwesel in past eras. And then there are “outstanding” features, which “stand out” in the literal sense of the word, awaiting closer discovery: 16 fortified towers still loom upwards today, joining the sections of the mighty town wall, much of which is accessible to the public. Up on the wall, the rich historic past of the town is shown off to even greater advantage. Schönburg castle and the two impressive churches, the Church of our Lady and St. Martin’s church, testify to the former importance of the town.
